About Swedish Allsvenskan

Allsvenskan is the top professional soccer league in Sweden. The 2026 season runs from March through November, with 16 teams competing for the title. Malmö FF are the defending champions after winning the 2025 title. The season is just getting started, with teams finding their rhythm.

Top teams

Malmö FF is the dominant force in Swedish soccer. They've won the most titles in recent years and have the deepest squad. Djurgårdens IF, Hammarby IF, and AIK are the other big clubs from Stockholm. BK Häcken, IF Elfsborg, and IFK Göteborg are regular contenders. The league is competitive at the top, with new challengers emerging every season.

Format

The league has 16 teams. Each plays each other twice in the regular season. The champion qualifies for the Champions League qualifiers. The second and third-place teams go into the Europa Conference League qualifiers. The bottom two teams are relegated to Superettan. The 14th-place team plays a relegation playoff against the third-place team from Superettan.

Viewership

Allsvenskan pulls strong numbers across Sweden. The Stockholm derbies between Djurgården, Hammarby, and AIK draw the biggest audiences. Over 4.5 million Swedes have a favorite team in the league, and 66 percent of the population follows Allsvenskan. The league has a massive following among Swedish soccer fans, and international interest comes from the Swedish diaspora in the US, UK, and other European countries.
