About Slovak Extraliga
The Slovak Extraliga (known as the Tipos Extraliga for sponsorship) is the top tier of professional ice hockey in Slovakia, featuring a fast-paced, highly physical style of play. Established in 1993, the league comprises 12 franchises representing the country's proudest hockey towns. Running from September through April, the campaign determines the national champions through a grueling postseason bracket, generating intense local atmospheres where future international stars and NHL draftees refine their games.

The battle for the Slovak crown is fiercely contested, with HK Nitra entering the season as defending champions after securing the 2025/26 title in a dramatic overtime Game 7 victory against HC Slovan Bratislava. Perennial heavyweights HC Košice, HK Poprad, and HKM Zvolen remain constant threats, making the race for direct quarter-final positioning a tight battle throughout the winter.
Format
The 12 franchises compete in a 50-game regular-season schedule. The top six teams qualify directly for the quarter-finals, while teams finishing seventh to tenth compete in a best-of-five play-in round. The playoffs are contested in best-of-seven series, culminating in the finals in April. At the other end of the standings, the bottom-ranked team is automatically relegated to the Slovak 1. Liga.
