About English League 1

League One is the third tier of English soccer. It's a 24-team division that runs from August through May. The season is known for its physical style, massive crowds for former Premier League clubs, and the constant pressure of promotion and relegation. The regular season is in the final stretch, with promotion and relegation battles heating up.

Top teams

League One is filled with clubs that have Premier League history. Bolton Wanderers, Charlton Athletic, Portsmouth, Derby County, and Ipswich Town have all spent time in the top flight. These clubs pull crowds that would be respectable in the Championship. The league also has smaller clubs that punch above their weight — teams like Peterborough United, Barnsley, and Wycombe Wanderers are regular promotion contenders. The mix of fallen giants and ambitious smaller clubs makes the league unpredictable.

Format

The league has 24 teams. Each plays each other twice. The top two teams are promoted automatically to the Championship. The next four teams go into a playoff for the third promotion spot. The bottom four teams are relegated to League Two. The schedule is brutal — 46 games, plus cup competitions. The pace is relentless. The teams that go up usually have the deepest squads.

Viewership

League One pulls between 10 and 15 million viewers globally each season. The numbers are strongest in the UK, where the big clubs have loyal followings. The playoff final at Wembley draws the biggest audience. International interest comes from fans of clubs like Bolton, Portsmouth, and Charlton who have followings abroad. The league is also watched by scouts looking for talent in the lower tiers.

Streaming options in the UK

Sky Sports+ is the new home of the EFL. They stream all games not shown on main Sky channels, including over 1,000 matches across the EFL. Every League One team will be featured live more than 20 times. NOW offers Day or Month memberships for Sky Sports, providing contract-free access. ITVX offers free-to-air highlights of League One. Domestic iFollow streaming has been replaced by Sky Sports+.

Streaming options in the US

Paramount+ is the exclusive home for the EFL in the US. They stream a massive selection of League One, League Two, and Championship matches, covering at least 250 EFL matches in total. CBS Sports Golazo Network often features select EFL matches for free. International club-specific streaming may be available if not picked up by CBS.

Streaming options in Canada

DAZN holds the rights for the EFL Championship and select League One and Two matches. For matches not broadcast by DAZN, individual club streaming services are available.

Streaming options in Europe

Viaplay covers EFL Championship with selected League One and League Two games, particularly in the Nordics, Netherlands, and surrounding areas. Rights are also distributed via local partners like Sport TV in Portugal, Exxen in Turkey, and Arena Sport in the Balkans. Club streaming is generally available for matches not selected for international television broadcast.

International streaming via iFollow and partners

For overseas fans, club streaming services (formerly iFollow) remain the primary source to watch matches not picked up by local TV partners. These services allow viewing of all 46 league matches. In India, FanCode is the exclusive rights holder for EFL matches. In the MENA region, Australia, and New Zealand, beIN Sports covers select EFL matches.

Current season

The 2025-26 League One season kicked off in August 2025. The regular season runs through May. The top two spots are up for grabs, with four or five clubs still in contention. The playoff race is wide open, with teams fighting for the final promotion spot. The relegation battle is tight at the bottom, with several clubs separated by just a few points. The season wraps up in May, with the playoff final at Wembley in late May.
