About English County Championship Division 1

The English County Championship Division One (branded as the Rothesay County Championship for sponsorship) is the premier first-class cricket competition in England and Wales. Contested by ten historic county clubs, the tournament is the ultimate test of red-ball cricket, featuring traditional four-day matches. Running from early April through to late September, the league tests the tactical minds and physical endurance of bowlers and batsmen as they battle under fluctuating British weather conditions for the hallowed county crown.

Top teams

The race for the county title is a battle of historic cricket clubs, with defending champions Nottinghamshire leading the division after securing their first title in 15 years in September 2025. Perennial heavyweights Surrey (champions from 2022 to 2024) and Essex remain primary title threats, while Somerset, Hampshire, and newly promoted Yorkshire and Sussex boast deep rosters capable of launching championship campaigns.

Format

The ten teams play a 14-match regular-season schedule in a double round-robin format. Matches are played over four days, with 96 overs scheduled per day. Under the championship points system, teams receive 16 points for a win and 8 for a draw, alongside batting and bowling bonus points awarded during the first 110 overs of each team's first innings. The bottom two teams at the end of the season are relegated to Division Two.

Viewership

First-class county cricket draws a highly dedicated global following of red-ball enthusiasts. The league's commitment to providing high-quality, free-to-watch live streams has driven massive digital engagement, with fans across India, Australia, and North America tuning in to track international stars and England Test players preparing for international series.

In the United Kingdom, fans can stream almost every match live and for free. All ten Division One county clubs stream their home matches live on their official YouTube channels and via the official ECB Match Centre / England Cricket App. Sky Sports Cricket broadcasts selected matches live, with live radio commentary carried on local BBC radio stations.

For cricket fans in the United States, all matches can be streamed live and free of charge via the official YouTube channels of the respective host county clubs, or through the free England Cricket App, bypassing regional geoblocks.
