About EFL Trophy

The EFL Trophy is a knockout cup competition for clubs in League One and League Two, the third and fourth tiers of English soccer. It also includes invited Premier League U21 academy teams. The tournament runs from August through April, with the final at Wembley Stadium. The knockout rounds are underway, with the final scheduled for next month.

Format

The EFL Trophy starts with a group stage. The 48 League One and League Two clubs are split into regional groups, joined by 16 Premier League U21 sides. The top teams advance to the knockout rounds. From there, it's single-leg ties until the final at Wembley. The group stage format has been controversial — some traditionalists don't like the U21 teams being involved, but the EFL argues it gives young players competitive experience.

Top teams

The trophy is often won by clubs who are pushing for promotion from League One. Portsmouth, Sunderland, and Rotherham have won it in recent years. The U21 teams rarely make deep runs — they're usually eliminated in the group stage or early knockouts. The tournament gives smaller clubs a realistic shot at a Wembley final, which is a huge deal for fans.

Viewership

The EFL Trophy pulls around 2 million viewers annually. The numbers are strongest in the UK, where fans of League One and League Two clubs follow the tournament closely. The final at Wembley draws the biggest audience. International interest is minimal, but hardcore English soccer fans in the US and Europe tune in for the later rounds.
