About Canadian Elite Basketball League

The Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) is Canada’s premier professional men's basketball league, showcasing elite domestic and international talent during the summer months. Established in 2018 to foster the growth of Canadian basketball and provide a pathway for homegrown athletes, the league features 10 franchises across two conferences. Spanning from early May to mid-August, the competition features fast-paced, high-scoring action under FIBA rules, culminating in a highly anticipated postseason. The 2026 campaign marks the eighth season in CEBL history, with the Niagara River Lions defending their back-to-back championship titles after a dominant 2025 campaign, heavily pursued by Western Conference giants like the Calgary Surge and Winnipeg Sea Bears.

Top teams

Elite status in the CEBL is fiercely contested, with the Eastern Conference dominated by the defending champions, the Niagara River Lions, who joined the league's elite history by winning back-to-back titles in 2024 and 2025 under head coach Victor Raso. Their main Eastern rival, the Scarborough Shooting Stars (the 2023 champions), remain a constant threat with their deep roster of athletic guards and veteran leadership. Out West, the Calgary Surge, fresh off a hard-fought championship appearance in 2025, bring a relentless defensive identity, while the Winnipeg Sea Bears boast a powerhouse roster that thrives under the noise of the league's most passionate fanbase. Additionally, the newly rebranded Saskatoon Mamba (formerly the Saskatchewan Rattlers) enter the season with fresh ownership and a revamped roster hungry to challenge the established contenders.

Format

The 10 franchises are divided into two five-team divisions: the Eastern Conference (Niagara, Scarborough, Ottawa, Brampton, and Montreal) and the Western Conference (Calgary, Vancouver, Winnipeg, Edmonton, and Saskatoon). Each team plays a 24-game regular-season schedule running from May 9 to August 3, 2026. The postseason features a brand-new format for 2026, transitioning from the single-game Championship Weekend format to a localized postseason structure where the top four teams in each conference qualify. The Conference Semifinals on August 6 pair the 1st vs. 4th and 2nd vs. 3rd in single-elimination matchups hosted by the higher seeds, followed by the Conference Finals on August 8–9. The winners advance to the historic CEBL Finals (August 12–16), a best-of-three championship series where the lower-seeded team hosts Game 1 and the higher seed hosts Games 2 and 3 (if necessary).

Viewership

The CEBL has experienced explosive growth in popularity, drawing record-breaking crowds across Canadian arenas, particularly at the Canada Life Centre in Winnipeg where the Sea Bears regularly pack over 7,000 to 10,000+ passionate supporters. Digital engagement has soared, with millions of fans tuning in nationally and internationally to watch high-intensity summer basketball. The league’s broadcast partnerships deliver live games to major metropolitan markets and digital screens worldwide, cementing the CEBL’s reputation as the fastest-growing professional sports league in Canada.

Streaming options in Canada

Canadian basketball fans can stream every single game of the 2026 season for free through the official broadcast partner, CBC Gem, as well as on the CBC Sports website (cbcsports.ca) and the official CBC Sports YouTube channel. Additionally, select marquee matchups, including the Conference Finals and the best-of-three CEBL Finals, are broadcast nationally on linear television via CBC TV. For comprehensive digital access and exclusive content, fans can also stream games via the league's dedicated OTT service, CEBL+.

Streaming options in the US

In the United States, basketball fans can catch all the action live and on-demand through the league's official OTT platform, CEBL+. Additionally, select regular-season games are syndicated and televised live on Next Level Sports. American viewers who wish to access the free Canadian CBC Sports streams can do so by using a reliable Virtual Private Network (VPN) set to a Canadian server to bypass regional geo-restrictions on CBC Gem.

Streaming options in the UK and Ireland

For fans in the United Kingdom and Ireland, live coverage of all CEBL fixtures is available through the CEBL+ digital network, which offers both live streaming and full game replays on-demand. Selected marquee matches may also be picked up by regional sports streaming providers, while British and Irish fans can also leverage VPN services to connect to Canadian locations and view free streams on the CBC Sports platforms.

International streaming options

Global audiences outside of Canada can access live and on-demand coverage of the entire season via CEBL+. In specific international territories, localized television and streaming rights holders carry selected matches, including Fox Sports in Australia, TapGo in the Philippines, SingTel in Singapore, and Astro in Malaysia, ensuring fans worldwide have direct access to the CEBL's elite summer competition.

Current season

The 2026 CEBL campaign tips off its 24-game regular season on May 9, 2026, running until August 3, 2026, to determine the final conference standings. The newly expanded postseason begins with single-elimination Conference Semifinals on August 6 and Conference Finals on August 8–9. The season concludes with the historic best-of-three CEBL Finals from August 12 to 16, 2026. The Niagara River Lions enter the season as two-time defending champions, with matches showcased across CBC TV and CBC Gem in Canada, Next Level Sports in the US, and CEBL+ globally.
