About Austrian Bundesliga

The Austrian Bundesliga is the top professional soccer league in Austria. It's a 12-team league with a split format — after the regular season, the top six go into a championship round and the bottom six fight to avoid relegation. The season runs from August through May. The league is in the final stretch, with teams pushing for European spots.

Top teams

Red Bull Salzburg is the dominant force in Austrian soccer. They've won the league almost every year since 2006. The budget gap between them and everyone else is massive. Sturm Graz is the closest challenger — they broke Salzburg's streak in 2024 and have been competitive since. Rapid Vienna and Austria Vienna are the traditional powerhouses from the capital. LASK and Wolfsberger AC round out the European contenders.

Star players

The Austrian league is a feeder system for bigger leagues. Salzburg develops talent and sells them to the Bundesliga and Premier League. Sturm Graz has built a solid squad around young Austrians and experienced veterans. The league doesn't have massive global stars, but it's a place where future stars get their start. Erling Haaland, Sadio Mané, and many others came through Salzburg on their way to the top.

Format

The Bundesliga uses a split format. All 12 teams play each other twice in the regular season. Then the top six go into the championship round, carrying over half their points. The bottom six go into the relegation round. The winner of the championship round takes the title. The last-place team in the relegation round goes down to the second division. It's designed to keep the season interesting even when one team is running away with it.

Viewership

The Austrian Bundesliga pulls about 10 million viewers annually across the region. The numbers are strongest in Austria and parts of Germany. The Vienna derby between Rapid and Austria Vienna is the biggest TV draw. Salzburg's European matches draw more viewers than most domestic games. The league doesn't have a massive global following, but it's a solid regional product.

TV options in Austria

Sky Sport Austria holds the exclusive broadcast rights for the Bundesliga. They show every match live. There's no free-to-air TV coverage for the regular season. ORF, the public broadcaster, shows highlights and sometimes the Cup final, but that's it. If you want to watch the league in Austria, Sky is the only option.

Streaming options in the US and Worldwide

For fans outside Austria, OneFootball is the official global streaming home. The app carries every Bundesliga match live in most countries, including the US, Canada, and the UK. You can buy a match pass or a season subscription. It's a straightforward setup — no cable required, no regional blackouts. Some matches also show up on ESPN+ in the US depending on the week, but OneFootball has the full package.

Current season

The 2025-26 Austrian Bundesliga season kicked off in August 2025. The regular season is winding down, with the championship round starting in April. Red Bull Salzburg is sitting at the top of the table, but Sturm Graz is within striking distance. The relegation round is also heating up, with three teams fighting to avoid the drop. The season wraps up in May.
