About NBA

The NBA is the top professional basketball league in the world. It's a 30-team league that runs from October through June, with the Finals wrapping up the season. The 2025-26 season is in the final stretch, with the playoffs starting next month. The Boston Celtics are the defending champions after winning the 2025 title.

Top teams

The Boston Celtics, Los Angeles Lakers, and Golden State Warriors are the league's flagship franchises. The defending champion Celtics are led by Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown. The Oklahoma City Thunder, led by Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, are the top team in the Western Conference. The Denver Nuggets, Milwaukee Bucks, and Cleveland Cavaliers are also title contenders. The league is deep. The playoff race in both conferences is tight as the regular season winds down.

Format

Each team plays 82 games in the regular season. The top six teams in each conference earn automatic playoff spots. Teams ranked 7th through 10th go into the Play-In Tournament for the final two spots in each conference. The playoffs are best-of-seven series. The Finals are also best-of-seven. The format rewards regular-season performance while leaving room for the Play-In drama.

Viewership

The NBA pulls over 1.5 billion viewers globally each season. The numbers are strongest in the United States, China, and Europe. The Finals and Christmas Day games draw the biggest audiences. The league has a massive international following, with stars from Europe, Africa, and Australia leading many teams.

Streaming options in the US

The 2025-26 season is the first under a new 11-year media rights deal. Coverage is split across three main partners. Prime Video is the exclusive home for 66 regular-season games, the Play-In Tournament, all knockout rounds of the NBA Cup, and about one-third of the playoffs. NBC and Peacock carry Tuesday and Sunday games, plus exclusive Monday night games and the All-Star Weekend. ESPN and Disney+ carry games on ABC and ESPN. NBA League Pass is still the option for out-of-market games, now heavily distributed through Prime Video and the NBA App. Regional Sports Networks still carry local in-market games, though many are moving to direct-to-consumer streaming apps.

Streaming options in the UK and Ireland

In the UK and Ireland, Sky Sports is the exclusive broadcaster for over 100 live games per season through 2036, including weekly primetime weekend games. Prime Video shows 86-plus regular-season games, exclusive playoff coverage, and the 2026 NBA Finals. NBA League Pass provides access to every game live or on demand.

Streaming options in Europe

Prime Video is a major hub for European NBA fans, with 11-year rights covering 66-plus regular-season games, NBA Cup knockouts, the Play-In, select playoffs, and the NBA Finals in certain years. Local broadcasters include DAZN and Movistar+ in Spain, beIN Sports in France, Sky Deutschland and DAZN in Germany, and Sky Sport Italia in Italy. NBA League Pass is available Europe-wide for comprehensive coverage.

International streaming options

Prime Video is expanding globally, covering select games in markets like Mexico and Brazil. ESPN continues as a major partner across South America, the Caribbean, and Australia. NBA League Pass remains the most reliable option worldwide to watch games not covered by local national broadcasters.

Current season

The 2025-26 NBA season kicked off in October 2025. The regular season runs through mid-April, with the Play-In Tournament following immediately after. The playoffs start in late April and run through June. The Boston Celtics are the defending champions. The Oklahoma City Thunder and Cleveland Cavaliers are the top teams in their conferences. NBA League Pass streams out-of-market games for international fans. Prime Video, NBC/Peacock, and ESPN/ABC split the national broadcasts.
